Barware and Bar Accessories for the Home Bar

Good barware is the difference between making a drink and making a decent one. A shaker that seals properly, a strainer that catches what it should, ice that melts slowly enough to leave the drink intact. None of it is complicated, and once you have it, pouring for friends stops being a production.

Choosing the Right Barware for Your Setup

If you are starting out, a shaker set covers most of it, since the multi piece sets bundle the shaker, jigger, strainer, spoon and pourers in one go rather than leaving you buying pieces individually. From there, ice is the thing most home bars get wrong. Standard freezer ice is small and dilutes a drink fast, where a large cube or a sphere melts slowly and keeps a whisky tasting the way it should. Beyond that it comes down to how you like to serve, whether that is a decanter on the sideboard, picks for garnishes or a rinser at the sink.

Key Pieces to Look for

  • Shaker set: the fastest way to cover the basics, with jigger, strainer, spoon and pourers included.
  • Stainless steel construction: holds cold, does not taint the drink and wipes clean.
  • Large format ice: cubes and spheres that melt slowly and dilute less.
  • Silicone moulds with lids: keep freezer odours out of the ice.
  • Strainers: a Hawthorne for shaken drinks, a fine mesh for anything muddled.
  • Decanter: a serving piece that works as an ornament between pours.
  • Finishing touches: cocktail picks for garnishes, a glass rinser for a clean start.

What You Will Find in This Collection

Stainless steel cocktail shaker sets in 11 and 20 piece configurations, including a rose gold finish, two piece cocktail strainer sets and stainless steel cocktail picks. For ice, there are large silicone cube trays with lids and a whisky ice ball mould set that comes with a storage bin and tongs. Serving pieces include sculptural wolf head whisky decanters in several finishes, and there is a bar glass rinser for anyone setting up a proper station.

Building the Space Around It

Barware needs somewhere to live. A wine rack keeps bottles off the bench, and stools turn a bench into a place people gather rather than pass through. Browse our bar stools range for seating and our kitchenware range for the rest of the gear.

Ordering with Allure Home Collections

Everything ships from our Australian warehouse with fast local delivery and honest pricing, with no inflated recommended retail prices to discount against. These pieces make straightforward gifts, so let us know if you are ordering for an occasion. From our family to yours.

Barware Questions, Answered

What barware do I need to start?

A shaker, a jigger for measuring, a strainer and a bar spoon will make almost any classic cocktail. A multi piece shaker set bundles all of them, which works out simpler and cheaper than buying each piece separately.

Why use large ice cubes or spheres?

A large cube has less surface area for its volume than a handful of small ones, so it melts more slowly and waters the drink down far less. For spirits served over ice, particularly whisky, it makes a noticeable difference by the second half of the glass.

How do I get clear ice rather than cloudy?

Cloudiness comes from dissolved air and minerals freezing into the centre. Boiling the water and letting it cool before freezing helps, and filtered water helps more. Freezing slowly from one direction gives the clearest result, though for most people at home a slight cloudiness makes no difference to the drink.

Why do ice moulds have lids?

A lid stops freezer odours transferring into the ice, which is the usual reason homemade ice tastes off. It also stops spills while you carry a full tray to the freezer and lets you stack trays without them contaminating each other.

What is the difference between a Hawthorne and a fine mesh strainer?

A Hawthorne strainer has a coiled spring and sits over the shaker to hold back ice and large pieces. A fine mesh strainer catches the smaller bits, such as fruit pulp, herb fragments or ice shards, and is used as a second strain for a cleaner drink.

Does a whisky decanter improve the spirit?

No, and this is worth knowing. Unlike wine, spirits do not benefit from breathing, and long term storage in a decanter can slowly dull the flavour if the stopper is not airtight. A decanter is a serving and display piece, so keep the bottle for storage and decant what you plan to drink.

Is barware dishwasher safe?

Check the individual listing. Stainless steel usually handles a dishwasher, though plated finishes such as rose gold last considerably longer with a rinse and a hand dry. Decanters and anything with a narrow neck are better washed by hand and left to drain upside down.

What does a glass rinser do?

You press a glass down onto it at the sink and jets rinse the inside in a second or two. It clears dust from stored glassware and gives a quick rinse between pours, which is why bars use them. At home it suits anyone running a dedicated bar area with a sink nearby.

How do I clean a decanter properly?

Rinse it with warm water straight after use rather than letting residue dry inside. For a stubborn film, warm water with a little uncooked rice swirled around lifts it without scratching. Avoid detergent, which leaves a taste, and stand it upside down to dry fully before storing.

Is barware a good gift?

It is one of the easier categories to buy for, since a shaker set or an ice ball mould suits someone who enjoys a drink without needing to know their taste in spirits. The decanters work as a display piece too, which makes them a safe choice for someone who already has the practical gear.
