Bathroom Tapware and Mixers to Finish the Room
Tapware is the jewellery of a bathroom. It is the thing your hand touches every day and the detail people notice first, and swapping a dated chrome set for matt black or brushed gold changes the whole room without a single tile coming off the wall. It is also the cheapest meaningful upgrade a bathroom can have.
Choosing the Right Tapware for Your Bathroom
Start with the basin, because it decides the tap. A standard inset basin takes a normal basin mixer. An above counter or vessel basin sits higher, so it needs a tall mixer or a wall mounted spout, and the spout has to reach far enough that water lands near the centre of the bowl rather than at the back edge. Wall mounted tapware looks clean and leaves the benchtop clear, but the rough in has to be set during the renovation, so it is not a straight swap on an existing bathroom. After that, pick a finish and carry it through the room. Matching the basin mixer, bath spout, shower and accessories does more for a bathroom than any individual piece.
Key Things to Look for in Bathroom Tapware
- Spout height and reach: matched to your basin, with tall mixers for above counter bowls.
- Mounting: deck mounted through the basin or benchtop, or wall mounted for a clear surface.
- Finish: matt black, polished chrome, brushed nickel and brushed gold across the range.
- Shape language: round or square, chosen to match the basin and the rest of the room.
- WELS rating: the water efficiency star rating, which is a legal requirement on tapware sold in Australia.
- Watermark certification: required for plumbing products installed in Australia.
- Braided hoses: supplied with many mixers, and worth checking before your plumber arrives.
What You Will Find in This Collection
Over a hundred pieces covering basin mixers in standard, tall and curved spout designs, wall mounted swivel bath spouts, wall twin taps and quarter turn sets, in round and square profiles. Finishes run across matt black, polished chrome, brushed nickel and brushed gold, so a full bathroom can be matched from one place. Pair them with our bathroom basins range, and carry the finish through with toilet paper holders and toothbrush holders.
Styles to Suit Your Space
Matt black is the strong contemporary choice and reads sharply against white tile and stone. Brushed nickel is warmer and more forgiving of water marks, which makes it the practical pick for a busy family bathroom. Brushed gold suits a Hamptons or warmer scheme and works particularly well with timber vanities. Polished chrome remains the safest and most timeless. Round profiles soften a room, square suits a more angular fit out.

Tapware Questions, Answered
Do I need a plumber to install tapware?
Yes. Installing and replacing tapware is licensed plumbing work in Australia, and doing it yourself can affect your home insurance and cause issues when you sell. Swapping a basin mixer is usually a short job for a licensed plumber, so factor it into the cost.
What tap height do I need for my basin?
An inset basin takes a standard mixer. An above counter or vessel basin sits high, so it needs a tall mixer or a wall spout. Measure from the benchtop to the basin rim, then check the spout clears it with enough reach that water lands near the middle of the bowl.
What is a WELS rating?
The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme rates how much water a tap uses, shown in stars with a flow rate in litres per minute. It is mandatory on tapware sold in Australia. More stars means less water and lower hot water costs, though a very low flow can feel weak on a large basin.
What does Watermark certification mean?
It certifies that a plumbing product meets Australian standards and is approved for installation here. Plumbers are required to install certified products, so uncertified tapware bought cheaply from overseas often cannot legally be fitted. Check the certification on any tapware before buying.
Can I switch to wall mounted tapware in an existing bathroom?
Not easily. Wall mounted taps need the pipework roughed in behind the wall at the right height and spacing, which means opening the wall and usually retiling. It is a renovation decision rather than an upgrade. If the wall is already set up for it, swapping the visible parts is straightforward.
Is matt black hard to keep clean?
It hides water marks better than chrome but shows soap residue and dust more, particularly in hard water areas. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth and dry it, and never use abrasive cleaners, scourers or anything acidic, which will damage the coating permanently.
Which finish is most practical for a family bathroom?
Brushed nickel and polished chrome are the most forgiving day to day. Brushed finishes hide fingerprints and water spotting better than polished ones, and chrome is the most durable of the lot. Matt black and brushed gold look excellent but ask a little more of you in upkeep.
Do the finishes match across different pieces?
Within the same range, yes. Across different manufacturers, brushed gold and brushed nickel in particular vary noticeably in warmth between brands. If you are matching a basin mixer to a bath spout, buying both from the same range is the safest way to get a true match.
Are braided hoses included?
Many mixers are supplied with them, and some are not. It is worth checking the listing before your plumber arrives, since turning up without hoses turns a quick job into a second visit.
Why is my new tap flow weaker than expected?
Usually the aerator, which is the mesh insert in the spout tip. Sediment disturbed during installation collects there. Unscrewing it and rinsing it out fixes it in most cases. If flow is weak across the whole house, that is a supply pressure issue for your plumber rather than the tap.
Should tapware match my other bathroom fittings?
Carrying one finish across the basin mixer, bath spout, shower and accessories is what makes a bathroom look designed rather than assembled. Mixing two finishes deliberately can work, but it needs a clear logic, such as all tapware in one finish and all handles in another.
