Prep work goes quickly with a machine that slices to a set thickness every time. A large knob at the centre of the blade disc adjusts the cut anywhere from 0 to 12 mm (0 to 0.5 in), so you can take paper thin slices for a salad or thicker cuts for cheese and roast potatoes without changing anything else.

It runs two ways. In electric mode you pull the spring lever, load the chute and press the switch, and the lever pushes the food forward on its own. Remove the protective casing, fit the supplied handle, and the same machine becomes a hand cranked slicer, which is useful at markets, on picnics or anywhere without power.

The food chute measures 22 x 9.4 x 14.5 cm (8.7 x 3.7 x 5.7 in) and takes potatoes, lemons, carrots, tomatoes, apples and cheese. A soft spring keeps softer produce from being crushed, six suction cups hold the machine still on the bench, and the two 420J2 stainless steel blades release with a snap for changing. The stainless steel body rinses clean at the sink.
